Barton, Johnson Seek Input On Legislation To Update 1996 Act
A new federal telecom bill will be up for serious debate when Congress returns to Washington following its August recess, said the chairman of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce. Speaking at the MTBC's 1st Friday Management In High-Tech Luncheon on Aug. 5, U.S. Rep. Joe Barton, R-Ennis, said among the changes he will seek is a repeal of the universal service requirement, which subsidizes phone service in rural areas.
"I believe in individual opportunity. I believe in free-market capitalism," Barton said. "So if you want a telecommunications bill that comes out in this Congress that protects vested interests, preserves the status quo and stymies entrepreneurship, I'm not your guy."
