Sarbanes-Oxley The Subject Of Two MTBC Programs In May

Virtually every company in the U.S. has been and will continue to be affected by the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002. The most comprehensive reform to the federal securities law since the 1930s, Sarbanes-Oxley is re-shaping the way America does business.

Passed in the wake of the Enron and WorldCom scandals, the Sarbanes-Oxley law requires companies to meet new provisions regarding disclosure of financial information. The law has created thousands of jobs and cost thousands of dollars as companies have scrambled to meet the compliance deadlines.

The Metroplex Technology Business Council will offer two distinct programs addressing compliance issues with the Sarbanes-Oxley law in May.

The First Friday in Management Luncheon on May 6 at the Radisson Hotel in Richardson will feature an overview of the law for CEOs and management-level executives. A panel discussion by Gene Monacelli, a Deloitte Consulting Principal, and Richard L. Brown, a product program director for IBM, will focus on helping companies figure out a way to reduce the cost of compliance and improve accountability. Deloitte and IBM will share practical advice and analyze the critical shortcomings that have been witnessed from helping more than 1,000 clients in their first-year compliance efforts.

The cost of the First Friday in Management Luncheon is $30 for members and $45 for non-members. Reservations are required and can be made on the MTBC Web site.

The MTBC Financial Executives Forum is hosting a half-day seminar on Sarbanes-Oxley on May 13 at Microsoft in Irving that will be specifically geared toward the financial executive. A panel of eight financial executives from leading companies in the Metroplex will drill into the details of Sarbanes-Oxley and the many issues that companies face in dealing with compliance.

Participating panel members have completed their first year of compliance and will share their opinion on a range of topics including: effectiveness of the regulation, efforts required and value gained from compliance, lessons learned, suggestions for continued compliance, opportunities for improvements, and the changing role of financial executives and the impact of regulation on the careers of financial executives. Comments and opinions will be summarized and submitted to the appropriate regulatory and oversight bodies as well as made available to the members of sponsoring organizations.

The Financial Executives Forum, formerly know as Senior Financial Executives Series, is a joint program sponsored by the Metroplex Technology Council, Financial Executives International, and the School of Management at the University of Texas at Dallas. The forum brings together senior financial executives from across the Metroplex and provides not only an opportunity for sharing best practices and benchmarking but serves as a collective voice to regulators and oversight boards.

The forum begins at 8 a.m. and concludes at 12:30 with a luncheon. Reservations are required to attend and can be made on the MTBC's Web site.
