MTBC To Launch Executive Coaching Program In RISD, PISD This Fall

Initiative Builds Relationships Between Businesses, Educators

The Metroplex Technology Business Council's Board of Directors recently endorsed an "executive coaching" program and will collaborate with the Greater Dallas Chamber of Commerce for implementation in the Richardson and Plano ISD's beginning in the fall of 2005.

The MTBC, through its network of executives, will enlist the 10-12 executives needed to begin the program. MTBC Board Member Shaunna Sowell, Texas Instruments, will serve as the facilitator for the program.

Executive coaching is an innovative concept created by Texas Instruments in 1990 that quickly grew into a program benefiting business professionals and school principals alike. Executive coaching builds relationships between the business sector and public schools by pairing principals with business executives and covering current issues affecting schools.

In 2000, after learning of its implementation by Texas Instruments, the Greater Dallas Chamber adopted the program and facilitated implementation in Dallas ISD schools.

One premise behind this group is that today’s quality of education will affect tomorrow’s quality of workforce. A second is that business professionals can offer advice regarding goal setting, strategic planning and the utilization of school and community resources in order to help principals manage and run schools more effectively.

Ben Simmons with TDIndustries and long-time participant said of the program: “Business professionals have a better sense of what is going on in schools, what principals, teachers and staff are dealing with. The program also serves as a window for principals to get insight into the business world. Executive coaching helps us appreciate principals for the work that they are doing.”

The program also serves to develop mentoring relationships on a one-on-one level promoting growth between both parties. Each principal is paired with an executive to determine personal goals, exchange information and share leadership skills. In addition to regularly scheduled meetings with their coach and/or principal, the pair also attends quarterly meetings among the entire executive coaching committee to discuss issues at the forefront of education, personal challenges and most importantly accomplishments. These meetings address such issues as: school safety, paid for performance, hiring process, school finance reform and others.
