In all, MTBC held more than 50 programs this year ranging in size from small groups of 25 to as large as 250 in attendances. The 3rd Friday Technical Luncheon, the signature luncheon for MTBC, has again attracted the biggest audiences of the year by featuring, as the series name implies, programs related to technical subjects. There were two programs during the year that focused on the wireless industry, two that focused on the technology of national security, and a couple of general technology-based programs. The three programs that drew the largest attendance and interest from MTBC members were the presentation in May by Chris Rice of SBC on "Wireless/Wireline Integration: Moving Beyond Mobility,” the presentation in July by Brian Woods of CompUSA on "Christmas In July -- What Will Be HOT This Fall," and the annual presentation in August of the Tech Titan Horizon Finalists. The 3rd Friday series concludes its 2005 programming on Nov. 18 with a presentation by Dr. Daniel Sands, chief medical officer for the Zix Corporation, who will be discussing "Information Technology In Healthcare: Change On The Way, Opportunity In The Air.” Launched in 1997, the series has hosted more than 85 programs featuring technology experts and industry leaders from across the nation. This luncheon series focuses on the technical aspects of the high-tech industry with speakers ranging from CEOs to engineers. Attendance at a 3rd Friday luncheon ranges from 100-150 people. The 1st Friday Luncheon Series, like its more technical counterpart, has had outstanding programs in 2005, but focuses on issues related to the management of high-tech companies. Programs ranged from “Innovative And Effective Use Of Technology In The Contact Center ” to “Digital Entertainment: Changing Consumer Habits.” One luncheon focused on the implementation of the Sarbanes-Oxley law and another on change management. The program that drew the largest audience was the presentation by U.S. Rep. Joe Barton in August on “The Telecom Industry: The View From Capitol Hill 10 Years Later” which focused on the Telecom Act of 1996. Another high-interest program was presented in April by UTD Economics Professor Don Hicks on “What Now for the Dallas Region? Getting Past the Past” which focused on what the technology industry should do to revitalize itself. And, the third most attended program was presented in September by Chip Tabor of Frito-Lay on "If The World Is Flat, How Will It Impact Your IT Decisions?" which was based on the book “The Word is Flat” by Thomas L. Friedman. The 1st Friday series closes out 2005 with a presentation on Nov. 4 by David Nicastro, president and founder of Secure Source, on "Cloak & Dagger In Corporate America." The purpose of the 1st Friday Management in High-Technology Luncheon is to provide management trends in technology to executives of high-tech companies in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. This luncheon series focuses on usages of technology, economic conditions and technology management trends for a range of companies from high-tech startups to large telecom manufacturers. Attendance at a 1st Friday luncheon ranges from 60-100 people. In addition to the two luncheon series, the MTBC's two Special Interest Groups (SIG) held several programs. The Financial Executives Forum, formerly known as the Senior Financial Executives Luncheon, held two half-day seminars in 2005. In May, the FEF sponsored a program on the “Implementation of Sarbanes-Oxley” and in October the program focused on “Emerging Trends In Finance And Accounting Shared Services.” In January, the RFID SIG featured analyst Mike Liard of Venture Development Group who addressed "RFID In '05 And Beyond - What To Expect." Since the January program the RFID committee has worked on a major branding effort for the RFID industry that will be announced at the Celebration Kickoff Dinner on Nov. 10.
