Buzz around the semiconductor and nanotechnology fields prompted the MTBC to form the groups which are intended to foster local industry. “These groups are a new concept for the MTBC,” said John Jacobs, senior vice president of the MTBC. “They are designed to expand the MTBC's tech menu for its members and help us meet the growing needs of these two industries in North Texas.” The semiconductor group has held one brainstorming meeting, but has not yet decided on a permanent meeting time. The nanotech group meets on the first Tuesday of every month at 11:30 in the MTBC's boardroom, 411 Belle Grove, Richardson. The programs are informative in nature and may feature a speaker or provide an overview of a company, or they may cover R&D updates or business transactions. At this time, focus group participants aren't required to be a member of the MTBC, but they must be actively involved in either the semiconductor or nanotech industries, respectively. As the groups grow and begin to require more staff attention, they will become Special Interest Groups. At that time, committee members will be required to join the MTBC and events will be open to the general membership and held offsite – much like the MTBC's RFID Special Interest Group.
