Futurist To Keynote RFID Branding Kickoff Dinner On Nov. 10

Futurist Frank Baitman, affiliate and research fellow for the Institute for the Future, will deliver the keynote address at the RFID Hub Kickoff Celebration Dinner presented by MTBC, AeA and IEEE on Nov. 10 at the Richardson Hotel.

Sponsorships for the Kickoff Celebration start at $1,000 and individual tickets are $150.

Baitman's presentation, titled “From Fits & Starts To An Internet Of Things: A Forecast For RFID” will address the challenges to the ultimate success of the industry.

“From souped-up barcodes for consumer goods to smart environments, RFID advocates have claimed that the technology will solve many of the world's problems,” said Baitman about his presentation. “Like most new technologies, however, its value has been overestimated, and its adoption has lagged. But like most new technologies, we may also be underestimating its effect in the long-run. There remain meaningful challenges to the ultimate success of RFID. Unless they are properly navigated by both industry and government, the technology might not achieve its potential. These key challenges along with a novel adoption path could accelerate social acceptance.”

The keynote presentation will be the highlight of an evening where the Dallas RFID industry will take center stage. The key focus of the evening includes the announcement of a major branding effort to recognize the Dallas area as the center of the RFID industry in the nation.

The branding program will identify Dallas as the leader and a world-renowned center of excellence for RFID in the nation, a region for the latest technological advances in RFID, the preferred location to do business for RFID and the end-user companies they serve, the region where RFID companies locate to increase customers and grow their business, and a program that will benefit the entire RFID value chain and associated communities.

Working with the University of North Texas Center for Digital Knowledge, the MTBC is publishing a map that will highlight the location of as many RFID companies in the region as possible. Used as a quick reference tool, the map will be in an Internet-based format with active links to the sponsoring companies and organizations. It will then be introduced as the centerpiece of the national branding program to more than 4,000 delegates at the 2006 RFID World Conference.

“The MTBC's RFID SIG changed its focus early this year from sponsoring a monthly luncheon series to undertaking this branding project,” said George Brody, CTO of GlobeRanger and a tri-chair of the RFID SIG Steering Committee. “The DFW area already has a growing number of companies engaged in the RFID space, so we plan to build on this solid foundation to build the brand. It may take a few years for the rest of the world to recognize this region as the hub of RFID, but the long term benefits are enormous.”

The Hub Kickoff Celebration will begin at 5 p.m. with networking around table top displays from some of the leading companies in the Dallas RFID industry. At 7 p.m. the celebration continues with a presentation on the upcoming RFID World Conference scheduled for late February at the Gaylord Texan and a presentation on a proposed RFID Dallas map project. At 8 p.m., Baitman will deliver his keynote presentation.

“This is more than just another banquet,” said Allan Griebenow, CEO of Axcess Inc and the RFID SIG steering committee tri-chair responsible for recruiting sponsors. “This will be a great evening where the local RFID industry can celebrate its achievements, look toward the future of this industry and at the same time launch the branding project.”
