As the longest continuous supporter of the Metroplex Technology Business Council's Third Friday Technical Luncheon Series, Thompson & Knight's attorneys and staff have had an opportunity to interact with decision-makers from technology companies in a wide variety of industries. Because of the lunches' technical focus and broad audience, companies and individuals from all over the U.S. have made presentations – and Thompson & Knight has right there with them to assist in the identification and presentation of key topics. Additionally, as an active member Thompson & Knight has been able to forge close contacts with other member companies in order to better understand their businesses, goals, and needs, enabling us to participate in such other MTBC activities as Tech Week in Austin. The visibility it receives as a MTBC member is another significant asset of membership. With its listing in the member directory of the MTBC Web site and its logo prominently displayed on the metroplextbc.org homepage and Third Friday site, community members know Thompson & Knight is committed to North Texas tech businesses. Through its Technology Practice Group, Thompson & Knight attorneys serve the complex legal needs of such technology-based businesses and institutions. Thompson & Knight has an extensive practice counseling developing science and technology-oriented clients including emerging companies, Fortune 500 clients, multinationals, venture capital funds, high technology incubators, and academic and commercial research institutions. Thompson & Knight's clients' technologies include aerospace, computer hardware and software, biogenetics, semiconductors, electronics, telecommunications, power generation, pollution control, chemicals and petrochemicals, and waste treatment. Thompson & Knight understands that, in marketing innovative products and services around the world, technology companies encounter complicated and novel legal issues that transcend traditional areas of law. Thompson & Knight's skill at counseling such companies reflects its attorneys' industry knowledge and scientific and technologies training and backgrounds. Several of its attorneys have degrees in such technical disciplines as electrical and mechanical engineering, applied mathematics, physics, and aeronautics, and a number were employed in the engineering and scientific fields prior to their legal careers. This interdisciplinary background in industry, technology, and the law, combined with years of counseling experience assisting emerging technology companies, enables Thompson & Knight to shape comprehensive business solutions for its clients. Thompson & Knight works in close partnership with technology company management and keeps current on the developments and innovations that affect their operations and markets.
