Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst to speak to MTBC

Texas Lt. Governor David Dewhurst will discuss his views on the 2009 Legislative Session, the legislative issues surrounding the high tech industry and what it means to North Texas at an MTBC Luncheon on December 17 at the Renaissance Hotel Dallas – Richardson. This special luncheon is being co-hosted by the Technical and Management Luncheon Committees in place of their regularly scheduled monthly luncheons.

After serving as an officer in the U.S. Air Force and stints with the Central Intelligence Agency and the U.S. State Department, Dewhurst began his business career in the mid 70’s.  He founded Falcon Seaboard, a Texas-based diversified energy and investments company, and went on to become an early developer in the electric cogeneration business.

In 1999, Dewhurst was elected the Commissioner of the Texas General Land Office, where he reduced the workforce and budget.  He also certified almost $1 billion in below-market interest rate loans to veterans to honor their service and stimulate the Texas economy.

Tech Titan of the Future Inspires Young Minds

Dr. Rebecca McGowan Jensen doesn’t believe in resting on her laurels.  On September 19, she was chosen as the Tech Titan of the Future: High School Award recipient at the 2008 MTBC Tech Titans Awards Gala.  The following Monday, she was back at work inspiring young minds and shaping the future of the north Texas high-tech industry.

“Dr. J,” as Jensen is affectionately called by her students, has taught at DISD’s School for the Talented and Gifted for 12 years.  Six years ago, Jensen was looking for a way to better reach her students and encourage them to pursue advanced level courses in science and math.  She turned to The Woman of Texas Instruments, a group of TI employees who contribute personal funds to increase girl’s interest in science technology, for inspiration.

The partnership resulted in a two-week summer camp to give DISD girls a jump on their high school science courses.  The Texas Instruments Physics Fellowship for Women is a hands-on mix of laboratory experiments, math reviews, field trips and inspirational talks with female professionals.  The camp has inspired more than 250 female students and shown them the possibilities that are out there for women in the high-tech industry.
