This issue home | Past issues | MTBC home Richardson Berkner STEM Academy is currently seeking summer intern positions for its junior class. The academy’s 80 juniors are pursuing rigorous academics in the disciplines of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. One component of the four-year plan includes an internship that would prepare students with career awareness and skills in specialized fields. Guidelines for the internship are flexible considering paid or non-paid, length of program, and job description. STEM Academy suggests a minimum of two to three weeks, approximately 100 hours, of paid or non-paid work in an environment that will expose students to real world applications of their coursework and projects. The RISD summer break begins June 8, 2009 and ends August 24, 2009; length and dates of the internships will be determined by the business offering the position. STEM students have completed coursework that includes PreAP/AP math and science courses. They have also completed Introduction to Engineering and Principles of Engineering classes governed by Project Lead the Way. The students have worked on projects such as the design and construction of simple machines, creating media products, and real life simulations of scientific principles. They bring experience in project based learning, presentation skills, and digital age literacy. In preparation for their internship hiring, they have written resumes and have been coached in interviewing skills. STEM Academy leaders encourage the bulk of the student’s time to be spent on job skills. Enclosed is a list of job skills relevant to the 21st century and to the fields the students will be working. Please consider these job skills when creating the internship’s job description. At this time, we are seeking businesses that can employ students for the summer of 2009. As soon as we get business commitments, we will post internship positions and allow students to sign up for the positions at the different businesses. If you can only employ two students, and four are interested in the position, you may determine which students to choose based on resumes or interviews. We act only as a personnel agency in finding positions, posting openings, and coordinating the steps for placement between the students and employers. Our goal is to have all students placed in internships by May 1, 2009.
